ABASTRACT.- Faccin T.C., Brumatti R.C., Lima S.C., Madureira R.C., Fernandes C.E.S., Kommers G.D. & Lemos R.A.A. 2015. [Economic losses through condemnation of bovine livers in abattoirs due to fibrosis induced by Brachiaria spp. ingestion.] E-mail: tatifaccin@hotmail.com Chronic ingestion of Brachiaria spp. by cattle causes in the liver fibrosis, atrophy of left lobe, compensatory hypertrophy of the right lobe, and bile duct proliferation. Typically, these lesions are associated with accumulation in the hepatic parenchyma of cluster with foamy macrophages. This study surveyed bovine livers with those lesions in a slaughterhouse in Central Brazil and estimated the economic losses caused by condemnation of such affected livers. During the study period, 488,476 cattle were slaughter in this particular abattoir. From 5,295 livers condemned due to fibrosis, 192 with lesions were sampled and studied. Economic calculations permitted to infer that the condemnations represented a loss of R$ 108,817.60. It is concluded that the condemnation of livers due to brachiaria-induced fibrosis causes significant economic losses for the meat industry due to condemnation of 23.6 tons of beef liver with an estimate annual loss of more than R$ 100,000.00 in a single slaughterhouse.

E-mail: adivaldo@ufrrj.br Spirochaetes transmitted by ticks are microorganisms of worldwide distribution, which infect wild, domestic animals and human beings. A total of 300 equine sera from four municipalities: Ananideua (58), Belém (61), Castanhal (131), and Santa Izabel do Pará (50), were evaluated for Borrelia burgdorferi by an Elisa test. There were no significant differences (P<0.05) among municipalities, breed, sex or husbandry. A total of 80 (26.7%) horses were B. burgdorferi positive with titles of 1:800, 72 (90%) horses, 1:1.600, 6 (7.5%) horses, and 1:3.200, 2 (2.5%) horses. The results were similar to those in the USA, where related frequencies ranged from 7 to 75% in asymptomatic seropositive horses. The presence of anti-B.burgdorferi homologous antibodies in horses from four municipalities in the metropolitan mesorregion of Belém suggests the possibility of occurrence of human cases in the region.

E-mail: silviobiotec@yahoo.com.br The objective was to genotypically compare 35 samples of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis obtained from abscesses of sheep and goats diagnosed with caseous lymphadenitis originated from 5 different municipalities in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco, Brazil. The RFLP-PCR technique with Hpy-Ch4 and Msp I and Pst I Msp I restriction enzimes was used to fingerprint the genes rpoB and pld, respectively. The results demonstrate that there was no difference on the fragments banding pattern among samples, independently of the host species or geographic area studied, defining a homogeneous profile of C. pseudotuberculosis responsible for superficial abscesses for the region.

Abstract in English:

Alves A.L., Madureira R.C., Silva R.A., Corrêa F.N. & Botteon R.C.C.M. 2004. [Frequency of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi in dogs from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.] E-mail: fabiolanc@ig.com.br Lyme disease is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Borrelia burgdorferi (Spirochaetae) and transmitted through ticks (Ixodidae). Many species of domestic and wild animals are affected. The dog is an important reservoir in the domiciliary environment. The disease affects the joints and causes alterations in other organs. Blood serum samples from 143 dogs, living in the counties of Seropédica, Itaguaí and Rio de Janeiro, were analyzed with the indirect ELISA test, to search for antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi latu sensu. Average positive results were 48.25%, 41.9% in Seropédica, 4.9% in Itaguaí and 1.4% in Rio de Janeiro. The titres varied from 1:400 to 1:6400. The prevalence was lower (p< 0.05) in dogs up to one year of age than in older dogs, with significant difference. Between males and females was no statistical difference with positives titres. The result of this survey should draw attention to the occurrence of Borrelia sp in the area studied, considering the importance of Lyme disease as an emerging zoonosis.

#5 - Seroprevalence of Babesia bovis in cattle in the "Norte Fluminense " mesoregion, 20(2):75-79

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Soares C.O., Souza J.C.P., Madruga C.R., Madureira R.C., Massard C.L. & Fonseca A.H. 2000. [Seroprevalence of Babesia bovis in cattle in the "Norte Fluminense" mesoregion.] Depto Parasitologia Animal, Univ. Fed. Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Km 47, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. Serumprevalence of antibodies against Babesia bovis were studied by the indirect EnzymeLinked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Sera samples from 532 bovines of nine municipalities in the "Norte Fluminense" mesoregion, state of Rio de Janeiro, were analysed. The results showed that 484 (90.98%) were positive by indirect ELISA, ofwhich were: 20.30% with a titre of 1:500, 35.72% of 1:1000, 20.87% of 1:2000, 7.33% of 1:4000, 2.82% of 1:8000, 2.63% of 1 :16000, 0.56% of1 :32000, 0.75% of 1 :64000, and 9.02%were negative. The prevalence analysis was done within three age groups: 1 to 3 years (n= 110), 3 to 6 years (n= 241) and > 6 years (n = 181), of which 98.18%, 90.87% and 86. 7 4% were positive, respectively. There were significant ditferences (P < 0,05) between the 1 to 3 year-group and other age groups. The young animals are less susceptible to the disease than older animals. According to the breed, 91.44% of beef cattle (n= 444) and 88.64% of dairy cattle (n= 88) were positive. Regarding the sex, 90.54% of the females (n = 497) and 97 .14% of the males (n = 35) were positive. There were no significant ditferences between breeding types and the sexes (P > 0.05). There were significant ditferences (P < 0.0001) between the prevalence in the ditferent municipalities. The infection by B. bovis in this mesoregion is heterogeneous, although the seroprevalence showed that the region has to be considered enzootically stable. The epidemiological situation requires immunization only of animals coming from other areas.

RESUMO.- Soares C.O., Souza J.C.P., Madruga C.R., Madureira R.C., Massard C.L. & Fonseca A.H. 2000. [Seroprevalence of Babesia bovis in cattle in the "Norte Fluminense" mesoregion.]
